'Gold Rush': Discovery Channel show follows six Portland-area men who search for gold in Alaska

Sometimes when the going gets tough, the tough guys go to Alaska. 

That's the case for six Oregon men who spent the summer mining for gold in Porcupine Creek, Alaska, trailed by a production crew filming their efforts for the 10-episode Discovery Channel series "Gold Rush: Alaska," premiering at 10 p.m. Friday. 

The latest in a series of programs that fall into the Tough Guy TV genre – think: "Deadliest Catch," "Dirty Jobs," "Ice Road Truckers," etc. – "Gold Rush" begins in Sandy as team leader Todd Hoffman tries to get his crew ready for their Alaska adventure.
